The Icing Room @ Jurong Point

Don't be deceived by their oh-so-pretty look. Again, they were rubbery. I now come to believe that all roll cakes from The Icing Room are made that way, rubbery and hard, much like leftover cakes from yesterday. Refer to http://theunwrittendeed.blogspot.com/2009/09/icing-room.html for my previous post on the same case.
Merry Macha ($4.20)

Jennifer Crusie, Bet Me

"'...Your prince is on his way.' 'Right, I’m sure he was on his way but a truck hit him.'"

"Where were all the women gamblers? It wasn’t as if being a woman wasn’t a huge risk all by itself. Twenty-eight percent of female homicide victims were killed by husbands or lovers. Which, come to think of it, was probably why there weren’t any women gamblers. Living with men was enough of a gamble." Minerva Dobbs

"That was one good thing about packing extra pounds, you got cleavage to burn."

"'What have you got against charming?' 'It so rarely goes hand in hand with 'honest'."

"'You’re not by any chance my stepmother are you?''Because that would explain so much.'"

"I was listening to Elvis singing ‘Love Me Tender’ last night, and it occurred to me that if he’d been reincarnated, he’d be about twenty-seven now, and I’m open to younger men. Statistically, the most successful marriages are those in which the woman is eight years older than the man. So I’ve decided to wait for Elvis to find me." Minerva Dobbs

"'What flaws?' 'Of course I have them, but I’ve been on my best behavior with you. Except for hitting you in the eye and attacking you on a picnic table.'"

"We don’t have to chill the wine at home, the atmosphere does it for us. "

"She sighed and picked up the snow globe Bonie had given her for Christmas, Cinderella and her prince on the steps of their blue castle, doves flying overhead. Cal Morrisey would look right at home on those steps. She, on the other hand, would be asked to try the servant’s entrance." Minerva Dobbs

"Men are visual."

ION @ Orchard

::The Nautilus Project
Raspberry Marshmallow ($3)

Chocolate Macaron and Lavender Macaron ($1.80 each). The chocolate one was nice, top sprinkled with cocoa powder. The lavender one was mediocre. By the way, macaroon and macaron are different types of confection. Refer to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Macaron for more information. I talk about this because I really find it amusing that even some shops who sell macarons are either mistaken or unaware of the difference between the two! This shop is one example of those that don't get it right.
::TWG Tea
Macarons ($2 each)
Pastries ($8.50 each). They are not given names, not that it matters because they taste so nice.

::Thann
Some Thailand beauty products (hair mask and moisturizing body spray). Tried and love it, especially the body spray because it is water-based therefore friendly to sensitive skin.

Fosters - The English Rose Cafe

Mediterranean Seafood Spaghetti ($24)
Roast Herbed Half Chicken ($18)
Chicken ala Kiev ($18)
Cod Fish & Chips ($23)
Gratinated Baked Fish ($25)

All prices haven't included taxes. For more on their menu and restaurant, go to http://www.fosters-restaurant.com/alacartemenu.htm. Located at Holland Village, this charming little cafe seems to have it all. Nice ambience (it is nearing Christmas and the season's ornaments adorn the whole room), hearty food, and attentive staff. The main disappointment and the main factor that makes me feel hesitant to come again came after we were served the foods (for which we waited for about half an hour), when the staff stopped filling the water in our glass. It seemed that lingering after meal was greatly discouraged. The food was great. The Mediterranean Seafood Spaghetti that I ordered was served with generous amount of their rich homemade tomato sauce and the seafood was fresh. Chicken in chicken ala kiev was infused with herby sauce that tasted very nice, making it my next target if I ever to come to that place again. Gratinated baked fish was another winner. The roasted chicken was good, though it somehow lacked the punch. My friend who ordered it looked bored.

"Time can be a greedy thing – sometimes it steals all the details for itself" (188).

Kiran Desai, The Inheritance of Loss

"Could fulfillment ever be felt as deeply as loss?" (2) Sai, in her contemplation on love.

"Love was the ache, the anticipation, the retreat, everything around it but the emotion itself" (3).

"The greatest love is love that’s never shown" (87) The cook, on the judge's feelings towards his wife.

"But so fluid a thing was love. It wasn’t firm, he was learning, it wasn’t a scripture; it was a wobbliness that lent itself to betrayal, taking the mold of whatever he poured it into. And in fact, it was difficult to keep from pouring it into numerous vessels. It could be used for all kinds of purposes..." (177).

"The present changes the past. Looking back you do not find what you left behind" (208) The judge, on Bose when Bose questioned if what was in the past remained unchanged.

"After the initial excitement was over, it often became obvious that the love was gone; for affection was only a habit after all, and people, they forgot, or they became accustomed to its absence. They returned and found just the façade" (233).

"…you must stop your thoughts if you wished to remain intact, or guilt and pity would take everything from you, even yourself from yourself" (264).

The Icing Room

I spotted a new item at The Icing Room, a light purplish cake called 'Tea Dance' though 'Tea Dance' had been the name of another type of cake (refer to my previous post http://theunwrittendeed.blogspot.com/2009/05/icing-roomagain-d.html). I like the previous 'Tea Dance' more. This one just didn't lift up to my standard. It was somehow bland, and the icing had texture somehow like shredded ice in ice cream that was not perfectly made. ($4.20)
Katharina Tiramisu ($5.20)

Revisiting Canelé Pâtisserie Chocolaterie @ Robertson Walk

Tomato & Crab ($16.50)
Marinara Spaghettini ($17.50). According to the menu, it was supposed to have mussels, scallops, squids, prawns but seriously I didn't find any squid in it.

Corn and Crab Chowder ($9.50)

Latte ($5)
Macaron Burger ($9.50) and Barcelona ($8.50)

For more on the menu (not updated on prices), click http://www.canele.com.sg/menu_rw.htm. The service has deteriorated and the staff were not attentive. Though there were only a few guests, they failed to notice that our glass was already empty. We had to call for it to be refilled everytime. This is really in contrary to my previous post (see http://theunwrittendeed.blogspot.com/2009/09/canele-patisserie-chocolaterie.html) in which I praised the service highly. The Macaron Burger was inventive though in terms of taste it was not outstanding. Barcelona was kinda of nice but not impressive either.

Starbucks Coffee

Black Peppered-Chicken Puff ($3.90). It was indeed very peppery but nice! Can make for a light dinner too.

Canelé Pâtisserie Chocolaterie @ Robertson Walk

A dreamlike cakeshop and restaurant serving delectable cakes and foods. The service was great, indeed one of the best that I have experienced so far. The experience was so good that both my friend and I planned to come back here soon. The waitresses were attentive and friendly, explaining in details to our questions and making recommendations. Water in our glass was always filled, and when my companion said that she was feeling cold, the waitress poured warm water for her. It was a kind gesture, though I was a bit scared of overheard conversation. The place was quiet so better kept conversation tone down. The ambience was good. The decoration was French Country-like. Calming songs from Enya completed the atmosphere.

The Icing Roommmmmm!!!

Original Cheese Cake Bar ($2.20)
Boston Chocolate ($4.20), tasted like Secret Recipe's Chocolate Indulgence and typical black forest cake blended together.
Apricotte ($3.80, yummmmmmy... The best of all the three.

El Patio @ Holland Village

The image quality is super low, blame it on me not bringing proper camera and having had to use phonecam, which works poorly in the dark. Anyway the photos were taken during my dinner at El Patio, a Mexican restaurant at Holland V. I ordered Chicken Pepper Fajitas (a little snap of it in the second picture) while my friend ordered Beef Fajitas ($20.50 and $22.50, respectively, GST and SC excluded). Both tasted great! After dinner, we had some drink, Mango Margarita and Lime Margarita (both @ $12, again GST and SC excluded), served in jam jar (how cute!). Oh yes, we can borrow colour marker and draw or write on the paper table! What an experience.

Khaled Hosseini, A Thousand Splendid Suns

"What was it about a season’s first snowfall, Mariam wondered, that was so entrancing? Was it the chance to see something as yet unsoiled, untrodden? To catch the fleeting grace of a new season, a lovely beginning, before it was trampled and corrupted?" (79).

"The brief and interminable time of feeling suspended. The not knowing. The waiting. Like a defendant about to hear the verdict" (156).

"But time is the most unforgiving of fires, and she couldn’t, in the end, save it all"(164).

"One could not count the moons that shimmer on her roofs, or the thousand splendid suns that hide behind her walls" (172).

"And the past held only this wisdom: that love was a damaging mistake, and its accomplice, hope, a treacherous illusion" (229).

"It is a hope as weak as my heart. This I know. But I will be waiting. I will be listening for your knock. I will be hoping" (360).

Osaka Saikasen

Red bean and chestnut filling. So so if not disappointing.

Lychee flavor filling. Not bad but not good either.

I am still trying to figure out what flavor it is. Too bad I don't know how to read Japanese. The flavor for each kind is actually written on the package. Red bean filling. Forgettable.

"I don’t want to be married just for the sake of being married. I can’t think of anything lonelier than spending the rest of my life with someone I can’t talk to, or worse, someone I can’t be silent with" (7).

"Come to that, how does he know where Susan and I are staying? What trains we are taking? All his flowers have been awaiting me on my arrival. I don’t know whether to feel flattered or hunted" (13).

Mochi with Chestnuts Filling and Chocolate Topping

I was not careful when I bought this (Refer to http://theunwrittendeed.blogspot.com/2009/08/tcc-prices-are-subjected-to-government.html). I thought it was mochi with chocolate filling and was surprised when I opened the packet. The mochi was yellowish and there was a pack of chocolate powder to sprinkle on top of the mochi. It was nice though, both with and without the chocolate topping. I personally prefer it unsprinkled, since the chocolate taste tends to mask the flavor of the chestnut filling.

"Men are the hunters and women are the gatherers. Shopping is a form of gathering" (33).

"Jealousy, envy, ego – those are the things success is made of" (128).

"It was one thing to lavishly spend someone else’s money but quite another to shell out your own" (393).

"Somehow, bad news, however ridden with static, however filled with echoes, always manages to be conveyed" (63).

"They were things for which it was impossible to prepare but which one spent a lifetime looking back at, trying to accept, interpret, comprehend. Things that should never have happened, that seemed out of place and wrong, these were what prevailed, what endured, in the end" (287).

Market Place at ION

Summeryberry Cake and Hazelnut Royaltine Cake (2 for $3.90, as shown in the picture below). Surprisingly sumptuous; considering the price one might be tempted to think they are of mediocre type. But this is another proof that price doesn't mean quality. I will definitely go back to have them again.

ChocoNana Parfait ($10. Contrary to Orange Flamingo that I previously tried (see http://theunwrittendeed.blogspot.com/2009/07/all-in-one-days-time.html), this one is seriously disappointing. Apart from cooking noodles and egg, I have never cooked before. Thus this is really my first attempt at cooking. I just realized that it takes around 15 minutes to cook pasta (I choose penne because its texture and shape are more friendly to my braces). I didn't know it at first and proceeded with making the sauce first. When the pasta was done the sauce was already cooled and had to be reheated. Half onto eating I discovered that the pasta was still hard and starchy, indication that I didn't properly stir the pasta as to get even heat for all. Nevertheless I love the sliced cheddar cheese which melted on the hot just-cooked pasta.

"It’s funny how people mark their lives, the benchmarks they choose to decide when a moment is more of a moment than any other. For life is made of them. I like to think the best ones of all are in my mind, that they run through my blood in their own memory bank for no one else but me to see." - Cecelia Ahern, Thanks for the Memories.

Phone Camera Snapshots

::8 January 2009
Early morning sunlight and a view of mostly Hall 14 from my room. This is what I get when I look out from the window.

::15 February 2009
Taken at Buona Vista MRT Station on a bright and cheerful morning after my visit to orthodontist.

::26 February 2009
Taken at noon on the first day of Chinese New Year. It was a mellow and cloudy day.

::15 February 2009
Empty bus stop

::22 March 2009
Beautiful blue and vermillion orange - hued dusk sky seen just outside my room =).

::5 April 2009
Taken on a misty, quiet, and serene Sunday morning from the block where I currently stay (Hall 13). Far in the distance in the first picture is NIE complex.

::23 April 2009
Taken from somewhere along the long stretch of Nanyang Avenue using my camera phone. I was walking to SSC (Student Services Centre) from SRC (Sports & Recreation Centre) when I realized that there were these views I never really noticed before. The altitude was quite high so I could see quite a lot of things up here. I even spotted Jurong Island! It seemed that it was only a few walking distance from NTU.
